Day 194 – There Must Have Been Some Magic…

There Must Have Been Some Magic...

Day 194

The Snow Man by Wallace Stevens

One must have a mind of winter
To regard the frost and the boughs
Of the pine-trees crusted with snow;

And have been cold a long time
To behold the junipers shagged with ice,
The spruces rough in the distant glitter

Of the January sun; and not to think
Of any misery in the sound of the wind,
In the sound of a few leaves,

Which is the sound of the land
Full of the same wind
That is blowing in the same bare place

For the listener, who listens in the snow,
And, nothing himself, beholds
Nothing that is not there and the nothing that is.

Samantha built this snowman yesterday after the big snow.  He is sightless, voiceless and sniff-less – she couldn’t find stones or a carrot to give him a face.  But I think he is lovely nonetheless!

  1. I think he’s marvelous, and needs no eyes, nose or mouth, being able this way to hold very very still and *feel* the winter world around him. He’s the very epitome of the listener in this poem full of the peaceful and pleasant melancholy of the season. Tell Samantha I admire her sculptural skills!

    • I was surprised that I didn’t have a lot of noise in these – I had neglected to move my ISO from 800 to the normal 100 I ALWAYS use. I had needed the high ISO earlier in the day and didn’t switch it back.
