Day 194
The Snow Man by Wallace Stevens
One must have a mind of winter
To regard the frost and the boughs
Of the pine-trees crusted with snow;
To regard the frost and the boughs
Of the pine-trees crusted with snow;
And have been cold a long time
To behold the junipers shagged with ice,
The spruces rough in the distant glitter
Of the January sun; and not to think
Of any misery in the sound of the wind,
In the sound of a few leaves,
Which is the sound of the land
Full of the same wind
That is blowing in the same bare place
For the listener, who listens in the snow,
And, nothing himself, beholds
Nothing that is not there and the nothing that is.
Samantha built this snowman yesterday after the big snow. He is sightless, voiceless and sniff-less – she couldn’t find stones or a carrot to give him a face. But I think he is lovely nonetheless!
I think he’s marvelous, and needs no eyes, nose or mouth, being able this way to hold very very still and *feel* the winter world around him. He’s the very epitome of the listener in this poem full of the peaceful and pleasant melancholy of the season. Tell Samantha I admire her sculptural skills!
I just noticed that he is armless as well! And we have a plethora of stick arms strewn about the yard that were generously donated by the trees over head!
Well, thank goodness the branches weren’t donated *on* your head!!!
Makes me smile 😀
She built a small one next to it today to keep it company – that makes me smile too!
Cool shot! (no pun intended, really, maybe) 😉 And I love the snow falling through your blog!
I got an email from the wordpress team telling me that the snow is available until January 4th. Of course, I jumped on that one!
Very nice. I like the lighting. In addition to your good eye, all your photos are so sharp and crisp.
I was surprised that I didn’t have a lot of noise in these – I had neglected to move my ISO from 800 to the normal 100 I ALWAYS use. I had needed the high ISO earlier in the day and didn’t switch it back.
I love the blue lighting on this!
That blue lighting is actually a halogen flashlight shoved into the snow about 12 feet from the snow man!
I smiled too…great photo
Thanks – just about everything my daughter does has a way of making me smile.
Love the cool tones. Works perfectly with the snow. 😀
I was really happy with what the little halogen light did. I was not expected blue this vibrant!
There is a lot of maginc here.
Awesome shot, and nicely composed!
The snowman was a very patient model!
