Day 188 – Our Prayer of Thanks

Our Prayer of Thanks

Day 188

Our Prayer of Thanks by Carl Sandburg

For the gladness here where the sun is shining at
evening on the weeds at the river,
Our prayer of thanks.

For the laughter of children who tumble barefooted and
bareheaded in the summer grass,
Our prayer of thanks.

For the sunset and the stars, the women and the white
arms that hold us,
Our prayer of thanks.

God,
If you are deaf and blind, if this is all lost to you,
God, if the dead in their coffins amid the silver handles
on the edge of town, or the reckless dead of war
days thrown unknown in pits, if these dead are
forever deaf and blind and lost,
Our prayer of thanks.

God,
The game is all your way, the secrets and the signals and
the system; and so for the break of the game and
the first play and the last.
Our prayer of thanks.

We had a wonderful Thanksgiving surrounded by family and made all the better by the fact that someone else did the cooking.  Doesn’t it always taste better when it comes from a kitchen not your own?  Onward, Christmas!

    • Carl Sandburg is my favorite poet and I find myself going back to him again and again. As for the image, I was getting fairly frustrated that day because neither my eye, nor my camera, were cooperating. My daughter and I were walking away from the park we were at after I had given up and I turned around for one more shot. This is it.

  1. Wow, both the crystalline clarity of the photo and the idea that it was caught only when all hope seemed lost and you relented and took one more look . . . there’s nothing to add!

. . . and yet, you deepen the mystery by adding the Sandburg poem.

You really are *something*, you know that?

    • I am ever the optimist, Kathryn – there is always something positive, always something around the corner, there is always room for improvement. If there is nothing else, look back and pull what you can from it. This was one of my better looks.
